Brussels, November 23, 2017 – It was early in the morning that a hundred entrepreneurs from
Belgian startups and scaleups, SMEs and other companies flew from Zaventem to Berlin. The
objective of this 48-hour trip: to discover the Berlin innovation ecosystem, promote the
development of the economic activity of Belgian companies in Germany, strengthen the exchange
with local actors and facilitate networking among participants.
The Innovation Plane delegation includes more than 60 organizations and 115 participants
representing startups, scaleups, SMEs, corporates as well as partners in the innovation sector and in
the Brussels-Capital Region.

The three organizers, Co.Station, BECI and Brussels Creative, are working with BNP Paribas Fortis,
the Brussels-Capital Region and Brussels Airlines to help young Belgian entrepreneurs and
corporates in their quest for innovation and development of the Belgian digital economy.

BERLIN: GERMAN POLITICAL AND TECHNOLOGICAL CAPITAL
Berlin is nowadays considered Germany’s technological center, having the potential to challenge Silicon Valley as the world capital of technological innovation. However, when Belgian companies go abroad, they mainly head off to the United States or France but much more rarely to Germany. Thus, this trip also aims to help Belgian companies to develop themselves in one of the largest European markets in the technology sector.

NETWORKING AND TAILOR MADE PROGRAM
The group will have the opportunity to discover some of the initiatives that have contributed to the
fame of Berlin. The mission aims in particular to discover the German know-how in circular
economy, scaling up and artificial intelligence / mobility:

  • The Scalingup track will take participants to meet a few local startups, influential incubators,
accelerators and other investors who will show them how innovation leads to success. The
program includes: visit of The Family, Berlin Partners, hub: raum, Rheingau Founders,
    Microsoft Accelerator, …
  •  A range of companies active in mobility, Smart Cities, as well as artificial intelligence and
virtual reality will reveal their keys to success to the AI & Mobility track group. Among the organizations that will be visited: Mint Engeneering, EUREF, VRNext, Deutsche Bahn, SAP Data Space …
  • Belgian entrepreneurs and companies taking part in the Circular Economy track group will meet, among others, EUREF, Urban Farm: ECF Farm Systems, Climate-Kic and Malzfabrik and will learn from them how they protect and optimize the natural capital of our planet.

INNOVATION PLANE: LEVER OF COLLABORATION
The Innovation Plane puts together two parties that do not share the same codes or the same
culture but who have the will to get closer. SMEs and corporates need to inject agility and flexibility
into their model. Startups must validate their innovation in the eyes of the market and investors.
The Innovation Plane promotes networking and exchange between startups and SMEs / German
corporates, as well as between all Belgian delegates participating in the mission.
The delegation arrived at Berlin airport aboard the Brussels Airlines Airbus A-320 “Magritte” symbol of one of Belgium’s contributions to the European heritage of creation. The aircraft is decorated with the famous clouds and birds, from three works of art by René Magritte. As René Magritte would have said when seeing this aircraft: "This is not an airplane, it is only the image of an airplane. And today the Innovation Plane takes off to discover Berlin’s ecosystem aboard the plane Magritte.
