Growing a business is not easy. You need to be confident, believe in yourself, in your ideas and never give up. You need to be willing to work hard and persevere no matter the situation.
Below, you can discover 6 challenges our Co.Station’s residents had to face as their business grow, alongside advices that will help you successfully manage these changes.
When growing a business… you need to bring in outsiders to help AND learn how to delegate properly trusting your management team and giving up day-to-day control of every detail.
JEROEN VANDE SIJPE, LAWYER & ENTREPRENEUR IN LEGAL SERVICES AT INTOLAW
“When you start growing, you have to manage a lot of people and that involves changing your management style. I’ve always been quite direct, with no regards of personal feelings of my employees and I had to change a lot of my personal style as a manager, to motivate, train and help other people, based on their own capacities. The fact that everybody is different is really important.”
JEROME STEFANSKI, CO-FOUNDER & MANAGING DIRECTOR AT THE LITTLE GUEST HOTELS COLLECTION
“I started alone and the key challenge was to find the right people for the right job, in terms of sales, finance, digital marketing… ”
MAARTEN LANDUYDT, CO-FOUNDER AT SKRYV
“We faced a lot of challenges of course. The main one was assembling a team with people that have roles that fits them well and in which they can grow and evolve. It’s definitely an area in which we learned a lot. Making the team work is really challenging”
Stand out in the sector
When growing a business… you have to face the competition and keep your focus on your unique value proposition to prospects and customers.
OLIVIA STEINER, HR MANAGER AT NVISO
“In a general point of view, I would say that it’s the sector itself because it’s growing fast right now. It’s difficult to be different and to have its own identity, create an image of experts in a world where a lot of people do the same thing.”
Changing the way people think
When growing a business… you need to persuade people that your product or service is worthwhile and relevant to them.
MICHAEL ROSSI, BUSINESS DEVELOPER AT HACK BELGIUM
“Changing the way of thinking of people. Changing minds is really hard. Because a lot of persons have their own way of innovating and they don’t see the point of looking for something else outside. They really don’t think about 10 years from now, they just think “It works now so it’s going to be ok for the future”. But if it works now, it doesn’t mean that it’s going to work in 10 days, 10 months… For me it’s not about living in the moment. You have to think about the future.”
When growing a business… you need to be patient. Anything of value takes time, whether it’s a matter of developing a skill, building a relationship, or launching a business initiative.
XAVIER DE MOOR, CEO AT CONDUGO
“The most difficult thing is the time between the first contact with the client and the sale of the product. It’s mostly because we work with big industrials and it’s slow, at least 6 months/1 year. But since last year, our product is really finished and now it’s a little faster. But the big companies don’t decide quickly.”
When growing a business… you need to stay innovative and creative enough. Creativity is definitely an essential part of organization if you want to drive your company to success and development.
GREGOIRE SCHELLAERT, MANAGEMENT & STRATEGIC CONSULTANT AT PKHA
“Stay creative. It’s why we came here, before that we were in our own office near Zaventem, near the airport. We were with our sheep, bees, trees and our garden. But at one point, you don’t have enough inspiration in this kind of close environment. So we decided to sell the office and to come in a coworking place, to be the opposite as before, to speak with young people, to have more ideas and to adapt them to the new world. And that gives us a lot of things”
